Setting up Service Learning
I'm going to be doing my service learning at Thunder Ridge Elementary. It's a fairly new school, though in the area west of Utah Lake a few years old is actually an old school. It's in a growing neighborhood and sits on a busy road that makes getting to school difficult during drop off and pick up hours. The school itself is nice. There are security cameras and secure locks preventing anyone from entering the school without being buzzed in by the office. I appreciate that because I have elementary age kids. The class I'm service learning with is 5th graders. The teacher of this class is very busy and was very excited to have me help her assist the 5th graders with math.
I'm excited for this class this semester. I understand that this class will help me determine just how much I'd like to be a teacher. It's a helpful course. Putting us in classrooms to help teachers teach and to learn from them is a valuable lesson. As I learn from this course about teaching and being in a classroom, about diversity in classrooms, and expectations of teachers, I'm going to be able to apply and witness these things in action simultaneously. Service learning while course learning seems very worthwhile for my education.
